Yes, the Komodo Islands is a must dive spot. Once you go there you will be planning many more trips back just like I have done. So this was my 2nd dive trip back to the Komodo Islands. My friend David (David graduated high school one year later than me. We both graduated from Jakarta International School where I graduated in 1986) set the whole six day trip up. It was awesome! There were two Chinese guys who were a load of fun and a wonderful couple from Indonesia. I was the only “western” person but totally loved talking Indonesian, especially to the boat crew. Both David and the couple diving spoke fluent English too which was wonderful.
As a TCK ( third culture kid) I am always excited when I get to start new friendships and learn more about other cultures. This six day trip was no exception. We flew from Bali into the tiny airport on the island of Flores. Then a quick taxi ride to the boat and off we went towards the Komodo islands. Our first dive, even though it was freezing (we dived the south part of the Komodo islands only for the first day), was for mantas. But no worries, we saw the “big” fish called “mola mola” also called ocean sunfish. The three we saw were just amazing! However, this Arizonian could not hack the cold waters (nor could the rest) so we all agreed to dive the northern part of the Komodo islands.
It was a fantastic six day diving trip and it was all done in a blink of the eye. I do love Indonesian food but was glad to see that there was bread for breakfast for this bule. Yes, I was born and raised in Indonesia for 19 years but I still have that American blood in me dying for some bread here and there. 3 times a day of rice just isn’t going to work for me. Toast and coffee in the morning hits the spot every time.
Thanks, David, for a great six days! David is a dive master and does dive tours for you in Bali and throughout Indonesia. Yes, I have a 3rd dive trip planned for Komodo islands but that won’t be till a couple years from now.
Cheers,
Diving Doug
