Raja Ampat Dive Trip – March 2015 – Diving with Whale Sharks in Triton Bay, Papua, Indonesia.
We swam with whale sharks! Did I just say that? I sure did!!! It was AMAZING!!! It was one of the highlights of our dive trip on the Arenui (see dive pictures here on my site at https://www.douggulleson.com/raja-ampat-dive-trip/).
We went on the two tenders from the Arenui boat (part of the crew was onboard which was so cool) and we went about 10 minutes to a fishing “outpost.” Just a “hut” out in the ocean (far from land but could see land) where fisherman stay and fish. The Arenui crew paid the fisherman to feed the whale sharks. They did and did the whale sharks love it!
There were three whale sharks and they were around 5-6 meters long. We were in Triton Bay, heading back later that day to the Raja Ampat area for more diving. I was able to take some great pictures and video with my GoPro 4. In fact, I have been totally happy and pleasantly surprised on how well the GoPro 4 did with the pictures. I didn’t take my wide angle Canon camera with me just because I wanted ot max my knowledge on the GoPro. I did! So these dive pictures were a testament on how great the GoPro can do with pictures. I think I was able to get about 10 – 15 feet from the biggest whale shark.
It was just totally amazing! Even the crew had a blast. We spent around 90 minutes there. In fact, my GoPro battery was on vapors once I finally was back in the tender.
Thank you, Arenui crew for making this happen! It was the highlight, one of the top highlights for sure of our dive trip.
